Anyone here from outside of Parkchester? Leland Avenue between Westchester Avenue and Gleason Ave? I remember Father Dollan from Blessed Sacrament who married most of my friends. Anyone attend James Monroe H.S.? Some of the kids from the area also attended St. Helena's H.S., JHS 125, P.S. 47x? Anyone out there? Remember the Circle Theatre?, Lowes American in Parkchester? Lowes Paradise on the Grand Concourse? Jahn's? Pakula's Bakery? Remember Krum's and the kitchen sink ice cream?
I grew up in the Morrisania section of the Bronx. After I got married we moved to Rosedale Ave and lived there from from 1968 to 1979. My younger son attended Blessed Sacrament for his second grade year in 1976. Sister Marie Camille was his teacher. In those days Father Pat Carroll was the much loved priest there and coordinated summer recreation for all the neighborhood kids. My other two kids attended Holy Cross School and my oldest also attended JHS 127, he graduated from JHS127 in 1977 then went on to Cardinal Hayes H.S. Also, plenty of good memories of either walking or taking the
#6 El train and getting off the one stop up to Parkchester. when we stopped at Zaro's bakery, boy did we stock up on all the delicious pastries, especially apple turnovers, cannolis, and cookies made with almonds,
(h-m-m!) The whole family looked forward to the good flicks at the Circle theater, Loew's American, and The Palace. Although we've lived out West for a number of years, I'll always keep good memories of the Bronx in my heart. By the way, anybody our there from the Bronxdale Housing projects? Our Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor grew up there.

I spent my summers in the Bronx and lived on Benedict Avenue when I did and later lived on Haviland Ave. I married one of the Mangan's who grew up on Haviland Ave. Their mother still there. I played Stick Ball and Hot Beans and Butter on the grounds of St. Helena's Elementary School where I went for 6th grade. I loved my time in the Bronx. I'm grateful for all the days I spent there. People still tell me they can tell I have that New York City edge. Something about the way I/we carry ourselves. I'm a proud New York City Girl.
